Spreading the love of board games one meeple at a time
Congratulations to Janek! – the Settler of Catan this past Saturday at our tournament. Janek was awarded the grand prize, a copy of the game Bang! and the pride of knowing he was the Lord of the Catan Board.
With 16 people competing for the title, some of the games got quite exciting! One of the boards turned into a “who has the longest road?” game, and for the last few rounds the longest road changed hands quite a few times.
As people were eliminated, we took the time to teach some new games including Dixit, Red Dragon Inn 2 and Munchkins – which was as much fun as playing Catan itself. Don’t get me wrong, Catan is great, but drinking your friends under the table at Red Dragon Inn 2 is a pretty great consolation prize. As I’ve mentioned before, I want to encourage people to play board games, and to introduce them to new ones, and this was a great way to do it. Sometimes you pick up a box at the game store, look at it, and put it down. But who knows? Maybe what was in that box could have been your favourite game ever, it’s just too hard to tell.
That’s why days like Saturday are so great. They offer an opportunity to try out new games, without shelling $40 out on a mystery box. I actually had a few conversations with people about their experiences going to a game store and being totally ignored by the staff/owner. Hmmmm… If we gamers are going to spread the love, we have to do so more actively.
Overall, the tournament was a huge success. We played some board games and had lots of fun. What a great way to spend an afternoon. I want to thank everyone who helped us out for all your hard work. Thank you to everyone who attended the event. I hope you had as much fun as I did.
See you at the next one!
